Being parented by radical support and enthusiasm with the mantra of do whatever you want as long as it makes you happy, Emily Goodsteins childhood and adolescence consisted of lots of creative obsessions: ceramics, then scrapbooking, then fimo clay, then pastry/frosting and, finally, to photography. Although she toyed with idea of going to the Culinary Institute of America, her interest in family planning (and her identification as a rebel rouser) led her to get a college degree in non-profit management while working at a bakery. After graduation, she worked at a small non-profit and did wedding photography on the side. She thought she should have been proud of her work and creatively fulfilled, but something just didnt seem.right. She reframed the question, What sounds good to do for the rest of my life? to What sounds good for the next little bit of time? She said No to wedding photography and Yes to birth photography, which seemed like the perfect fit of her two passions: photography and family planning. She knew she needed to photograph more births when she found herself crying through the labor and feeling weird that the rest of the world was still going on while this baby was being born. Emily shares so much on todays episode, but we specifically touch on: how she discovered birth photography and what made it feel like it was meant for her what made her feel that she was ready to leave her job, and how she made it happen with just 1 month of lead time the logistics of client processes and scheduling as a birth story photographer the upside of being authentically you online and off as it relates to your business and client relationships how she gets online marketing clients without marketing herself how to know when your business idea is the right one!
